To Georgia O’Keeffe (1887 – 1986), a modernist artist who grew up in rural Wisconsin with an appreciation of nature, a rose was not just a rose. “White Rose with Larkspur,” representing a flower of enormous size and exquisite coloring demanding attention typifies O’Keefe’s signature flower paintings. It is a reflection of the enormous impact O’Keeffe had on 20th century art that her groundbreaking work earned her the first one-woman show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
